SR20DET
HISTORY
Following the CA18 engine, the 4 cylinder SR20DET was first introduced
in 1991 and has been the mainstay of the engines produced by Nissan even
until this day. The aluminum block design enabled the engine to be
lightweight, continuing to be produced for 12 years until August of
2002. The final edition of the SR20DET can be found in the final
production era of the S15 Silvia.

SR20DET in
the US
The United States industry currently is focused on such motor sports as
time attack circuit racing, drag racing and drifting. Here, the Nissan
240SX can be seen as a competitive platform, with the enthusiasts
discarding the original KA24DE for the more powerful Japanese spec
SR20DET unit. However, the drawback was that these engines were not
produced and equipped in the US spec 240SX so the enthusiasts were left
to import the engines and perform a transplant. Currently in the US, and
also in Japan, the SR20DET is becoming scarce mainly because the
popularity of this chassis in the sport of drifting. It is common to
hear about the dedicated Nissan enthusiasts going through great lengths
to get the engine to the US and find out later that the unit is
problematic. It is also widely known that most of the American tuning
shops are also left to work with used components when exchanging
cylinder heads and blocks because they have no source of a new
component.

CONDITIONS
OF AN USED SR20DET
The majority of these engines have suffered a great deal of wear and
tear, frictional loss, and abrasions. The areas most often affected are
the inner side of the cylinders, pistons, bearings, main journals,
valves, valve guides, and seat rings. The SR20DET users acknowledge
these problematic aspects, however it is recommended to further consider
the fact that the performance of these worn down engines greatly differ
and begin to deteriorate with every use.

NEW S15
SR20DET ENGINE BENEFITS
Although it may only be around for a short period of time, there are
ways to obtain a new SR20DET engine. The tuners and race teams that are
serious about winning and cannot risk using worn down components can now
acquire a new long block to build an efficient and reliable full race
engine. The final edition of the SR20DET, which has gone through 5
variations, is the best SR20 unit money can buy.
